Our Story

In the early 1960s, brothers John and Rusty Loness owned a small machine shop. Rusty focused on tool and die work, while John specialized in automated screw machining. As demand for screw machine parts grew, John and his wife, Alfreda, saw the opportunity to build something of their own. In 1968, they founded H & M Machine Service, naming the company after their well-known nicknames, “Herman” and “Mable.”

In 1971, after serving his country in the military, their son Gene “Gus” Loness joined the business and worked alongside his father to master the trade. By the late 1980s, H & M had grown significantly, prompting John to incorporate the company and partner with Gus.

When John unexpectedly passed away in 1991, Gus took the reins, continuing to expand the shop with new equipment and a growing customer base. His wife, Wendy, became President in 2015, carrying forward the strong foundation John and Gus had built. Just a few years later, in 2018, the next generation stepped in as Gus’s daughters, Sandra Loness Cammarata and Michelle Loness Cook, became President and Vice President.

Sandra and Michelle grew up in the shop, learning firsthand from their grandfather and father what it takes to succeed in the machining industry. Today, they honor that legacy through hard work, a commitment to quality, and superior customer service. Under their leadership, H & M has proudly maintained its ISO 9001:2015 certification.

In 2020, H & M expanded its capabilities once again by adding Swiss machining to its portfolio—bringing even greater precision and value to the industries we serve.

Continuing our tradition of innovation and community impact, in 2025, H & M partnered with Boone Center, Inc. (BCI), a Missouri nonprofit dedicated to supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through meaningful employment. Through this partnership, BCI serves as H & M’s agent for procurement, logistics, shipping/receiving, and billing, while also providing co-packaging and co-manufacturing services. This collaboration strengthens our ability to deliver high-quality screw machine products at competitive prices, while supporting an important social mission in our community.

Growing up, Sandra and Michelle watched their grandfather and father give so many people an opportunity when they needed it most. From giving someone who was down on their luck a job even though there was no opening, to paying for a funeral for someone they barely knew when the family could not afford it, or buying lunch for an elderly woman at a restaurant without even telling her. The partnership with BCI is now another opportunity to give back.

Since 1968, H & M has been committed to precision, quality, and customer satisfaction—and with each generation, we continue to build on that legacy.
